A key topic during the forum was the potential of FD-SOI technology. Industry experts have long questioned whether it can secure a strong market presence, build a robust ecosystem, and meet the needs of the 5G era. Sanjay addressed these concerns directly, reinforcing confidence in FD-SOI as a viable and competitive solution.
China represents a significant opportunity for FD-SOI technology, and Gexin is making substantial investments here. Out of the 35 customers currently working on 22FDX® with Gexin, ten are based in China. The company has been actively expanding its footprint, including the official opening of its 12-inch wafer fab in Chengdu in February 2017, followed by a recent ceremony marking further progress. The facility is expected to be fully operational by mid-2024. In May 2017, Gexin signed a collaboration agreement with Chengdu to establish an FD-SOI industry ecosystem, aiming to foster local fabless companies and support over 500 engineers in developing products for mobile, connected, 5G, IoT, and automotive markets.
Sanjay emphasized that FD-SOI is particularly well-suited for applications such as mobile devices, IoT (including NB-IoT, GPS, NFC), RF and millimeter-wave systems (such as 5G, LTE, and WiFi), and automotive electronics (like microcontrollers, radar, and ADAS). The 22FDX platform, designed to meet 5G demands, integrates advanced functions up to 22 GHz, including ADAS radar, making it ideal for automotive applications. This versatility highlights the broad market demand for FD-SOI and drives continuous improvements in the technology itself.
The 22FDX® platform offers an integrated solution for high-performance, low-power, and cost-effective IoT, mobile devices, wireless communication, and networking. Sanjay noted that compared to other similar technologies, 22FDX® provides fewer masks, lower power consumption, higher density, and better performance. Additionally, its body bias technology simplifies design, reduces time-to-market, and enables short-term peak performance, offering customers a competitive edge while cutting development costs.
At the forum, Sanjay introduced the core-embedded eMRAM technology based on the 22FDX® platform. Combined with the high energy efficiency of FDX® and differentiated RF and millimeter-wave IP, this makes 22FDX an ideal platform for battery-powered IoT and autonomous driving radar SoCs.
Gexin has been continuously advancing FD-SOI technology, and recently completed physical verification of large-scale IP. During his speech, Sanjay announced the successful design of ARM Cortex-A53 and Mali-T820 cores based on 22FDX®, demonstrating the platform’s performance through reduced area and power consumption.
To accelerate the adoption of FD-SOI from design to mass production, Gexin launched the FDXceleratorâ„¢ initiative in 2016. This collaborative ecosystem helps customers transition smoothly from 40nm or 28nm nodes to FD-SOI, enabling innovative 22FDX solutions. As of September, the number of partners had grown from seven to 33, reflecting strong industry support for FD-SOI technology.
In addition to FD-SOI, Sanjay also highlighted the importance of RF-SOI technology. He noted that while FD-SOI focuses on integration, RF-SOI is centered on front-end module design. Gexin holds the largest market share in the RF sector, with over 32 billion RF-SOI chips delivered to date. The company continues to evolve its RF-SOI technology to meet diverse customer needs.
Finally, Sanjay introduced the 12FDX® technology, built on a 12nm FD-SOI platform. It offers performance comparable to 10nm FinFETs, with better power efficiency and lower costs than 14/16nm FinFETs. This technology is set to enable a wide range of applications, from mobile computing and 5G networking to AI and autonomous systems.
"We have all the applications and technologies, and our industry is gaining momentum. We are entering a huge market," Sanjay concluded. "We will bring silicon-proven IP to China, build our factories, and create an ecosystem for FD-SOI. All of this shows that FD-SOI is exactly what China needs."
As a member of the SOI Alliance and a sponsor of the Shanghai FD-SOI Forum, Gexin is proud to see the industry’s growth. The company aims to become a key player in China’s FD-SOI ecosystem, leveraging innovation and leadership to strengthen infrastructure and drive industrial transformation.
