Ningbo was shortlisted for the 2017 smart manufacturing pilot project, winning with Hengsheng, Wanhua and Jianxin
Intelligent manufacturing has become the core direction of China's "Made in China 2025" strategy, and it has always been a top priority for the nation. In 2017, the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology released the list of smart manufacturing pilot demonstration projects, and Ningbo made a remarkable achievement by having three of its projects selected. This marks a significant step forward in the city’s efforts to promote intelligent industrial transformation.
The selected projects include the "Jiansheng" automotive electronics intelligent manufacturing project, the "Wanhua" chemical production intelligent factory project, and the "Jianxin" automobile chassis intelligent factory project. These initiatives are not only representative of Ningbo’s advanced manufacturing capabilities but also serve as models for other regions to follow. The government has emphasized that these pilot projects aim to enhance technological equipment and industrial internet innovation, promoting the overall upgrading of China’s manufacturing sector.
Since 2015, the Ministry has launched a special action plan to implement "Made in China 2025" through the construction of a strong manufacturing country. Last year, two projects from Ningbo—Cixing and Zhenhai Refining—were also recognized as national pilot demonstrations. This year’s selection further highlights the city’s growing influence in the field of smart manufacturing.
One of the key projects, the Jiansheng automotive electronics initiative, has enabled seamless integration across material handling, production, equipment, testing, and packaging. Workers can input product serial numbers into the system, which then automatically manages inventory and materials. Additionally, the system supports automatic product testing and big data analysis, significantly improving efficiency and reducing human error.
As the global economy moves toward an era of "Internet +", characterized by cross-border integration and intelligent development, Ningbo is well-positioned to seize new opportunities. The city is leveraging this trend to foster the growth of new industries, business models, and innovative products, while also driving the digital transformation of traditional sectors.
To accelerate this process, Ningbo recently announced the "Three-Year Action Plan on Accelerating the Implementation of Technological Transformation of Enterprises." Over the next three years, the city aims to achieve full coverage of enterprise technological upgrades and intelligent diagnostics for qualified companies. As the first pilot city for "Made in China 2025," Ningbo is committed to making intelligent manufacturing the standard for enterprises, ensuring sustainable growth and improved productivity.
According to officials from the Municipal Economic and Information Committee, the progress of the "Made in China 2025" pilot program in Ningbo is steady, and the city is playing a crucial role in shaping the future of China’s manufacturing industry. With continued investment and strategic planning, intelligent manufacturing will soon become the norm, not just an option, for businesses across the region.
