Are all high prices? Sharp Ultra HD 8K TV is not close to the people
To be honest, after Sharp's close relationship with Foxconn, the industry once questioned whether Sharp, under the Foxconn Group, still had the technical strength and innovative edge that made it the "father of LCD." Fortunately, Sharp remained Sharp—proving its worth through its disdain for AQUOS 8K TVs. The launch of 8K TVs across four global markets was a clear statement of intent.
At a time when OLEDs and quantum dot technologies are gaining momentum, Sharp remains steadfast in its belief that liquid crystal technology is still the foundation of display innovation. While others chase new trends, Sharp continues to focus on perfecting LCDs, showing deep commitment to this field. According to Sharp, no matter how advanced other technologies become, the core of display quality lies in fundamentals.
On the market level, consumers are increasingly demanding higher resolution. Sharp’s bold 8K strategy under Foxconn seems well thought out. This not only signals a strong push into the color TV market but also reflects a deeper "big screen" strategy aimed at enhancing user experience. More importantly, 8K clarity is said to be 4.3 times more detailed than what the human eye can perceive, effectively solving the issue of image clarity on large screens. As Chen Zhenguo, vice president of Foxconn Group, explained, even a 70-inch TV viewed from just 68 cm away feels comfortable, proving that size doesn’t have to mean loss of quality.
But here’s the big question: How long will it take for 8K TVs to reach the average consumer? Today, most display tech is still stuck at the 4K stage, and due to a lack of content, many 4K TVs are more of a marketing gimmick than a real upgrade. So, launching 8K now might seem premature. Without proper content support, Sharp’s 8K TVs may struggle to deliver their full potential—like a martial arts master who has all the skills but no one to practice against.
Take the Sharp LCD-70SX970A, priced at 688,880 yuan—it’s clearly not a product for the masses. However, after returning to China, Sharp started a price war, and combined with Foxconn’s manufacturing expertise, it still holds a strong position in the market. For a while, the new Sharp brand was seen as high-end yet not overly expensive. Now, though, when you see a TV near the 70,000 yuan mark, most people would think twice before buying.
While Foxconn is confident it can mass-produce 8K TVs within 18 months, I believe that leading the trend is commendable, but ultimately, the success of 8K depends on content availability and affordability. Until then, it might remain a luxury rather than a mainstream product.
