Why do we say that the development of artificial intelligence in 2018 should listen more to women's opinions?

NetEase Smart News, January 14 – One thing is certain: in just one year, the field of computer science won’t be able to solve decades-old issues like gender discrimination. Recent reports show that women make up only 20% of engineers at major tech companies such as Google and Facebook, with even lower numbers at Uber. Meanwhile, incidents like a sexual harassment case in a Silicon Valley company or a Google engineer’s controversial memo claiming women aren’t suited for programming have sparked serious concerns. These events highlight the need for change in 2018, especially when it comes to artificial intelligence.

At first glance, AI seems like an unlikely space for women. Hanna Wallach, a researcher in AI and co-founder of “A Symposium on the Role of Women in Machine Learning,” notes that only 13.5% of machine learning professionals are women. During the #MeToo movement, AI researchers also investigated allegations of sexual harassment and received complaints about inappropriate gender jokes at major conferences like NIPS.

However, there are now three new initiatives and advocacy groups focused on AI, backed by major tech companies and aiming to reshape the design and implementation of AI—specifically with a focus on protecting women’s rights.

The Partnership on AI, composed of tech giants like Apple, Facebook, and Microsoft, has hired Terah Lyons as its executive director. Lyons previously worked as a policy advisor to the U.S. Chief Technology Officer under the Obama administration, where she helped explore AI’s potential to transform the world.

The main goal of the Partnership on AI is to “enhance public understanding of AI technology and develop best practices for addressing challenges and opportunities.” Funded by some of the largest tech companies, the group works on shaping federal policies and thinking about the future of AI.

Meanwhile, AI Now, a research institute from New York University, was launched this fall by Kate Crawford of Microsoft Research and Meredith Whittaker of Google Open Research. One of its key missions is to ensure that AI developers collaborate closely with end users. For example, in medical applications, they want doctors to be part of the development process. This approach helps AI address real-world problems rather than just those programmers think are important.

To increase the number of women entering AI, there's AI4ALL, a nonprofit summer program at Princeton University. Founded in 2016 by computer vision expert Olga Russakovsky and others, the program assigns different tasks to high school students. This year, AI4ALL received funding from Melinda Gates and will expand to four universities in 2018. Its mission is to help women, minorities, and low-income students learn more about AI.

When speaking to MIT Technology Review, Russakovsky emphasized that AI4ALL isn’t just run by women—it has a 50% male board of directors.

She said, “In the industry, our organization is different.”

For Russakovsky, the question is whether 2018 will bring better treatment for women in AI. While power still lies largely in the hands of white men in San Francisco, she sees hope in the work being done at AI4ALL.

“I don’t know if 2018 will be completely improved, but the change has already started,” she said. “I believe these changes will happen after the next wave of students we train.”

Solar Light

The category introduction of Solar Light can be elaborated from multiple dimensions. The following is a comprehensive category introduction:
Solar Light, taken literally, refers to the light produced by solar energy, i.e., sunlight or daylight. However, in the commercial and technical fields, the category of Solar Light may more broadly cover solar related lighting equipment, inspection equipment, and various products that use solar energy for light conversion and applications.
Solar Light products usually have the following technical characteristics:
Environmental protection and energy saving: The use of renewable energy - solar energy to work, reduce dependence on traditional energy and environmental pollution.
Intelligent control: Some products have intelligent control function, which can automatically adjust the working state according to the lighting intensity, time and other conditions.
High efficiency and stability: The use of advanced conversion technology and materials to improve energy conversion efficiency and product stability.
Portable and easy to use: Some portable solar equipment such as flashlights, lamps and other small design, easy to carry and use.
With the global attention to renewable energy and the continuous progress of Solar energy technology, the market prospect of Solar Light is very broad. Especially in the home, commercial, industrial and other fields of application will continue to expand, to contribute to energy saving and sustainable development. At the same time, with the continuous innovation of technology and the continuous upgrading of products, Solar Light products will be more intelligent, efficient and convenient to meet the growing needs of people.
