Micro LED is bright in the future of automotive display
The latest report from the LED Research Center of Jibang Consulting, titled *"4Q17 Micro LED Next Generation Display Technology – Micro/Mini LED Application Research and Analysis in the Vehicle Display Market,"* highlights significant growth in the automotive display industry. According to the report, global passenger car displays reached approximately 241 million units in 2017. By 2025, this number is expected to surge to 624 million, with a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 13% over the same period. This rapid expansion is driven by the rise of smart connected cars, electric vehicles, and autonomous driving technologies, which have significantly increased the demand for in-vehicle displays.
Looking at the specifications of Micro LED technology, it presents a promising opportunity for low-resolution (PPI) applications. The primary challenge lies in the low process transfer rate of Micro LED, which currently limits its use in high-resolution (PPI) displays. As a result, low-resolution instrument panels—such as those used for indicator functions—are considered the most viable entry points for Micro LED in the automotive sector.
In terms of performance, Micro LED surpasses OLED in key areas such as contrast and brightness, offering better cost-performance ratios. This makes it a strong candidate to replace both IT and automotive display technologies in the future. However, the automotive panel market has high entry barriers, requiring extensive testing and validation periods of at least three years. Despite this, once a supplier is integrated into a car manufacturer’s supply chain, the panel supply becomes stable, and pricing remains consistent, making it difficult to replace.
The trend toward panelization in vehicles is already taking shape across multiple applications, including cluster displays, central control panels (CID), and infotainment systems. Instrument panels have evolved from smaller, spliced screens (3.5–10 inches) to larger combined displays (10.3–12.5 inches). Similarly, CID has transitioned from partial displays (6–9 inches) to full-vehicle control interfaces (10.1–17 inches), while infotainment displays have shifted from intrusive designs (7–9 inches) to non-intrusive, larger formats (10.3–11.4 inches). These developments reflect an increasing demand for larger, higher-brightness, and wider-viewing-angle displays, along with more regular shapes and smooth surfaces.
Currently, the automotive market is still dominated by LCDs due to their reliability and stability. However, LCDs face criticism for their reliance on backlighting, which can lead to issues with surface uniformity. OLEDs are also being explored but still require improvements in reliability. If Micro LED can overcome these challenges, it stands a strong chance of capturing a significant share of the market. The all-digital dashboard represents the next evolution in automotive design, offering enhanced functionality, richer content, and a more intuitive user experience. Typical display sizes range from 3.5–12.5 inches, with current mainstream models featuring integrated panels between 10.3–12.5 inches. Pixel density (PPI) typically falls between 111–199, and brightness levels need to reach 800–1000 cd/m² to ensure visibility under bright ambient conditions.
