The 2017 World Smart Manufacturing Conference is about to open, and the local clusters “strengthen†smart manufacturing
The 2017 World Smart Manufacturing Conference took place in Nanjing from December 6th to 8th, highlighting the growing importance of smart manufacturing as a core pillar of China’s "Made in China 2025" strategy. Jiangsu, one of the country's most significant manufacturing provinces, has been actively driving the development of advanced, intelligent, and green manufacturing. Over recent years, the province has made steady progress in expanding its industrial scale, promoting pilot projects for smart manufacturing, and enhancing its capacity for industrial innovation. As a result, Jiangsu has emerged as a leading hub for intelligent manufacturing.
Jiangsu is well-positioned to lead in smart manufacturing due to several key factors. First, it boasts a strong industrial foundation, with its manufacturing sector consistently ranking first in total output. The province also has a comprehensive industrial system, with many companies reaching or approaching international standards. Second, the level of integration between industry and information technology is high, with Jiangsu leading the nation in several key metrics. Third, the region benefits from strong research and educational support, with over 140 universities and a large number of academicians, contributing to its top-ranked scientific and technological innovation capability. Finally, Jiangsu has a favorable environment for development, shaped by a long tradition of industrial focus and entrepreneurial spirit.
Nanjing, a key city under the "Made in China 2025" initiative, has deep historical roots in modern industry. Since the establishment of the Jinling Manufacturing Bureau in 1865, it has become a cradle of Chinese industrialization. Today, Nanjing continues to play a pivotal role in smart manufacturing through initiatives like the “Eight Ones†project, which includes hosting major exhibitions, establishing industry alliances, creating smart factories, and developing core industries.
Southern Jiangsu, known for its concentration of manufacturing clusters, has become a model for smart manufacturing. It was among the first regions to embrace reform and opening up and has since developed into a global hub for advanced manufacturing. Cities like Changzhou, Suzhou, Wuxi, and Zhenjiang are all making significant strides in building smart manufacturing ecosystems.
Changzhou aims to become a national-level smart manufacturing city, focusing on high-end, intelligent, and green development. Suzhou plans to establish 10 smart factories by 2020, while Wuxi emphasizes smart factories, products, and equipment. Zhenjiang is investing heavily in industrial robotics and smart manufacturing industries, aiming to build a competitive base in these fields.
Currently, Jiangsu has made remarkable progress in smart manufacturing. The province has launched numerous national pilot projects, including 12 national smart manufacturing demonstration projects and 26 nationally supported initiatives. With over 388 intelligent workshops and a high rate of automation and networking, Jiangsu is rapidly transforming its manufacturing landscape. In 2016, Nanjing’s smart manufacturing equipment industry saw a 12.2% revenue growth, while Suzhou reported a 41% coverage of smart production in its enterprises. These developments mark a significant step forward in Jiangsu’s journey toward becoming a global leader in intelligent manufacturing.
