The 2017 World Smart Manufacturing Conference is about to open, and the local clusters “strengthen†smart manufacturing
The 2017 World Smart Manufacturing Conference took place in Nanjing from December 6th to 8th, marking a significant step forward in China’s push toward intelligent industrial development. As a core component of the "Made in China 2025" initiative, smart manufacturing has become a strategic priority for Jiangsu, one of the country's most prominent manufacturing provinces. Over recent years, Jiangsu has made remarkable progress in advancing its manufacturing sector through high-end, international, intelligent, and green development. The industry has grown steadily, with pilot projects in smart manufacturing being implemented efficiently. Innovation capabilities have also strengthened, positioning Jiangsu as a leading hub for intelligent manufacturing.
Jiangsu is well-equipped to lead the smart manufacturing revolution. First, it boasts a strong industrial foundation, with the manufacturing sector consistently ranking first in total output nationwide. Its comprehensive industrial system includes many companies that have reached or are approaching advanced global standards. Second, the province enjoys a high level of integration between information technology and manufacturing, with top rankings in key indicators related to this integration. Third, Jiangsu benefits from robust support in research and innovation, with over 140 universities and a large number of academicians, making it a leader in technological innovation. Finally, the region has a favorable environment for industrial growth, shaped by a long tradition of entrepreneurship and openness.
Nanjing, a key city in the "Made in China 2025" initiative, has a rich history in modern industry. It was here, in 1865, that the Jinling Manufacturing Bureau was established, laying the foundation for Nanjing’s industrial legacy. Over time, the city became home to iconic enterprises like the British Keishi Bank, the Jinpu Railway, and the predecessor of Nanjing Chemical Industry Co., Ltd. These developments helped shape the early stages of China’s modern industrialization.
Southern Jiangsu, known as a manufacturing powerhouse, is a pioneer in reform and opening up. It has evolved into a global industrial cluster with concentrated resources, a well-structured system, and strong collaboration. This area has become a model for smart manufacturing, with a focus on high-end, intelligent, and sustainable development.
In recent years, various regions in Jiangsu have intensified their efforts in smart manufacturing. The southern part of the province, in particular, has been at the forefront of this transformation. Jiangsu has actively promoted the establishment of national smart manufacturing demonstration zones, explored new models of customization, and supported the development of big data industries. The province has also invested heavily in R&D for intelligent equipment, software, and network infrastructure, while encouraging enterprises to build smart factories and develop innovative solutions.
Nanjing has launched the “Eight Ones†project to build a smart manufacturing city. This includes hosting major exhibitions, forming industry alliances, creating smart factories, developing core industries, and introducing supportive policies. Changzhou aims to become a national-level smart manufacturing city, focusing on high-end, intelligent, and green development. Suzhou plans to establish 10 smart factories by 2020, while Wuxi emphasizes smart factories, products, and equipment. Zhenjiang has focused on industrial robots and smart manufacturing, building a competitive base in these sectors.
Smart manufacturing has significantly improved across Jiangsu. The province has achieved notable success in pilot projects, with a growing number of enterprises adopting intelligent systems. By 2017, Jiangsu had selected 12 national smart manufacturing pilot projects, with numerous companies demonstrating leadership in integration and digital transformation. Key metrics such as automation rates, equipment networking, and e-commerce adoption have all seen substantial improvements.
In Nanjing, the smart manufacturing equipment industry saw a 12.2% revenue increase in 2016, with even stronger growth in 2017. Suzhou has developed a comprehensive smart industrial system, with significant coverage in design, production, and management. In Changzhou, the equipment manufacturing sector accounts for a large share of the industrial output, with many products reaching world-leading levels. Wuxi and Zhenjiang have also made strides, with multiple provincial and national pilot projects highlighting their commitment to smart manufacturing.
Overall, Jiangsu continues to drive forward the transformation of its manufacturing industry, positioning itself as a global leader in smart and intelligent production.
