Ningde into the world's largest polymer lithium-ion battery production base

On the 13th, a reporter learned from local authorities in Ningde City that after nearly a decade of development, the city has become the world's largest production base for polymer lithium-ion batteries. Its products are supplied to well-known brands such as Apple, Huawei, Xiaomi, OPPO, and Meizu. Moreover, Ningde is the only city in China that mass-produces battery power systems for global car manufacturers like BMW and Volkswagen. Since the establishment of Ningde New Energy Technology Co., Ltd. (ATL) in March 2008, the city’s lithium-ion new energy industry has seen explosive growth, with an average annual growth rate of 144%. This has become a key driver of Ningde’s industrial economy. From January to September this year, the lithium new energy sector generated an output value of 25.752 billion yuan and added value of 10.893 billion yuan, accounting for 21% of the city’s total industrial added value. This represents a 51.9% increase compared to the same period last year, contributing 349% to the city’s industrial growth and pulling it up by 7 percentage points. It is now the fastest-growing industry in Ningde. Today, ATL and CATL have emerged as global leaders. ATL is the world’s top manufacturer of consumer polymer lithium-ion batteries, while CATL ranks second globally in power battery production. In 2017, the combined output value of these two leading companies exceeded 35 billion yuan. Looking ahead, it is expected that by the end of the "13th Five-Year Plan," the total scale of Ningde’s lithium-ion new energy industry will surpass 100 billion yuan. Of this, the battery manufacturing sector is projected to reach 70 billion yuan, while the supporting materials and equipment industries will exceed 30 billion yuan. More and more smartphones now support fast charging, thanks to the high-performance lithium-ion batteries produced by ATL. These batteries feature high energy density, fast charging capabilities, customizable shapes, and enhanced safety. Their quality is among the best in the world, setting trends in the market. Additionally, they offer full-service solutions, including custom design, sample production, system integration, safety certification, and mass production, making them a preferred supplier for major brands like Apple, Huawei, Xiaomi, OPPO, Meizu, and Xinjiang. CATL’s power batteries also stand out, featuring core technologies in materials, battery cells, battery systems, and recycling. With energy densities reaching up to 250Wh/kg, these batteries can be used in electric passenger vehicles. The system comes with a warranty of at least 8 years or 120,000 kilometers. Domestically, CATL partners with major automakers such as Yutong, Jinlong, Beiqi, SAIC, GAC, and Geely. It is the only Chinese company providing volume production for BMW and Volkswagen, and its products are set to enter the European markets of Peugeot, Citroen, Nissan, Renault, Mercedes-Benz, and General Motors between 2018 and 2019. Meanwhile, the lithium battery industry chain project has been steadily progressing. As of November, 36 projects have been connected to the supply chain, with a total investment of 24.742 billion yuan. These projects cover a wide range of industrial chain products, including lithium-ion battery separator coating materials, aluminum-plastic films, anode and cathode materials, separators, aluminum foil, copper foil, electrolytes, battery components, cell shells, and molds. This demonstrates the growing influence and appeal of Ningde’s lithium new energy industry. Led by companies like ATL and CATL, Ningde’s lithium new energy industry is driving the development of the new energy vehicle sector. It supports the growth of high-end equipment, motor power systems, control systems, and testing and certification industries. Currently, the industry is showing strong leadership, with coordinated development across the supply chain. With East China and Jiaocheng as the core, the industry is expanding to surrounding counties such as Fuan, Fuding, Gutian, and Pingnan. The Ningde Municipal Committee and municipal government have identified the lithium new energy industry as a strategic pillar and a key focus area for development during the "13th Five-Year Plan" period.
