Apple Spends US$200 Million to Acquire an Artificial Intelligence Startup Company

Netease Technology News May 14 news, according to "Fortune" website reported that many informed sources revealed that Apple has acquired data mining and machine learning company Lattice.io.

On Saturday, Apple confirmed the acquisition of Lattice.io by telephone and provided the following statement via email: "Apple acquires small technology companies from time to time, and we generally do not discuss the purpose or plan of our acquisition."

With regard to Lattice.io, there is not much public information available, but according to the company's database of Crunchbase, the startup was born in a research project called DeepDive at Stanford University. The company's technology seems to be mainly using machine learning to resolve database or network data to answer user queries.

Lattice.io was founded by Chris Re, a professor of computer science at Stanford University, and Michael Cafarella, a professor of computer science at the University of Michigan. Kafarella is one of the developers of Hadoop, the first big data technology, and it has been widely used. Earlier, Cafarella was an engineer at telecom company TellMe Networks. In 2007, Microsoft acquired the company for US$800 million.

On the technology website businessinsider, a piece of data for 2015 shows that Chris Ray's Deep Dive project aims to understand "dark data," that is, information provided in images or illustrations.

Lattice.io's technology is also similar to Google’s “Knowledge Graph”, a technology that understands the relationship between people, places, and things and can be “City of California’s capital”. Questions provide answers.

One of the sources said that Apple’s purchase price for Lattice.io was between 175 million and 200 million U.S. dollars. Lattice.io has raised a sum of money from Madonna Venture Group, the investment company, and GV, the parent company of Google's parent company Alphabet, but the amount has not been disclosed.
