Oscar's Famous Director Brings "Meat and Sand" to the Show Cannes: VR is the Ultimate Resonator

The 70th Cannes Film International Film Festival has been opened. We have previously reported that the VR short film "Carne y Arena" (Flesh) was created by the renowned director Alejandro González Iñárritu. And Sha) became the first VR piece to enter the formal screening unit in Cannes. The filmmaker who won two consecutive Academy Awards for “Birdman” and “Wilderness Hunter” used VR and installation art to turn the “meat and sand” six and a half minutes into a soul-stirring resonance. Try to get more people to understand the life of illegal immigrants.

"Meat and Sand" is not a movie but an installation art

Although "Flesh and Sand" got on the official list of the Cannes Film Festival early, the venue and time for the film experience has not been clearly stated. Indiewire's correspondent Anne Thompson revealed in the article that the venue of the film is in a warehouse 30 minutes away from Cannes. As to why the warehouse was selected, everyone will understand because Inarrito’s VR video is not for everyone. Think of it like that, directly in a 3 * 3 small grid, wear VR head display can be seen, it is more like an installation art.

The experiencer will first enter a white room that resembles a hospital, where the audience will be asked to pack and take off shoes and socks. When the red lights in the room began to flash, the audience opened the door and entered a dark space. The floor of the room was covered with sand. At this time, the staff assembled the backpack computer, VR headset and headset to the audience, and asked the audience not to worry about the walls. When they approached, the staff would prompt.

In a desert, distant mountains can be seen. Populations began to appear in the bushes and people complained of pain and discomfort. As night fell, the crowd began to stir and shout, and the ground began to vibrate - the helicopter came, and the border patrolman held guns to intimidate the crowd and scolded and subdued the refugees. The flashlight's lights turned on different images. One woman's leg was injured and the other tried to help her, but eventually the police made her stand up. At this time, a beam of light hit the audience. The border patrolman looked at you and the atmosphere became quite tense.

If you go close enough, you can not only see the pixels of the characters produced by CG, but also “enter” their bodies and see the hearts of people who are nervous and fast beating, not only as refugees, but also as border patrolmen. The same is true.

According to Anne's description, it can be seen that "meat and sand" is a large space VR experience, similar to the form of The Void or Zero Latency, using optical motion capture to create a large scene, the audience with a backpack computer and VR head , you can walk freely in the scene. The sand and floor that can be shaken on the ground are part of the film experience and are important bridges connecting the real world and the virtual world.

In VR, viewers will be free to expose themselves

In the VR video, there is a scene where a young boy is staring at a long bar table along a flashlight. A small clay person walks into the pit on the table and a small boat full of people appears. The prototype of this scene came from a sinking of a fishing boat in Libya a few years ago when there were 700 illegal immigrants on board, most of whom were children. "This scene is my tribute to them." Director Inarito said that he has visited the world for several years and met with refugees to listen to them tell their own stories. "You will find that this is not a specific area. This is a global phenomenon." The director concluded. The inspiration for the creation of "meat and sand" comes from the personal experience of these refugees.

"I don't know at all how to achieve it technically. They (ILM) have to make a new computer system for this project." Inarritu said that the "Raw and Sand" VR project was directed and old partner photographer Emmanuel Lubezki. As well as the achievements of ILMxLAB, the three parties have worked closely together in the Wilderness Hunter project. ILMxLAB has unique advantages in vr technology. When Inarito wanted to make VR works, it was a natural partner.

For a good director, the previously mastered image grammar is totally inapplicable in VR, and it is also a huge challenge. "The movie is the art of the frame. The frameless movie is like a car without a tire. It can't be called a car at all." The director said, "A movie is such a thing. As a director, I only pass this peephole. Show 20% of things, the rest of the audience to imagine." Inaritu said.

But the grammar of VR is completely different, and the control power falls into the hands of the audience, but it should also be noted that this means that the audience is also more likely to expose the true self. “I give you 360°, give you lighting and sound effects, you have the freedom to choose, your choices also expose yourself.” Inaritu said he disclosed the performance of the “meat and sand” audience, everyone's performance all different. Some viewers did not dare to move around at only one spot; some viewers would hide behind border patrols; others would follow the police's orders to the ground. “The VR experience is a bit like Sex. For the first time, there are too many things to experience. The second time you will find it more carefully, there are a lot of secrets in it.” said the director.

Politics and Resonance

“VR is the ultimate resonator,” Chris Milk defined VR at a TED conference a few years ago. His work “Clouds Over Sidra” is a work for the United Nations and tells the story of Syrian refugees. At the Tribeca Film Festival last month, Catherine Bigelow, who won the Oscar's Best Director Award for "The Hurt Locker" premiered the VR film "The Protectors" at the film show. The director's and National Geographic's cooperation project tells the story of African Wildlife Guardians.

The arts used to express political claims are commonplace. The Berlin Film Festival, one of the three major film festivals, is often criticized as "politics in command." The new medium of VR has a natural advantage in emotional communication because of its “on-the-spot feel”. It is very natural for artists to use their “weapons” to express their ideas. As in Inarito's "Meat and Sand."

The "meat and sand" show in Cannes is only part of the show. The full version will be premiered at Fondazione Prada in Milan in June this year and will be shown at the LACMA Museum in Los Angeles in July.
