Simple comparison between IGZO and AMOLED display technology

IGZO (indium gallium zinc oxide) is an abbreviation for indium gallium zinc oxide, which is a channel layer material used in next-generation thin film transistor technology. The IGZO material was first proposed by the Tokyo Institute of Technology in Japan, and the application of the material and technology patents was mainly owned by Japanese manufacturers. The IGZO-TFT technology was first produced in Japan by Sharp Corporation.

AMOLED (AcTIveMatrix/OrganicLightEmitTIngDiode) is an active matrix organic light emitting diode panel. Compared with traditional liquid crystal panels, AMOLED has the characteristics of faster response, higher contrast, and wider viewing angle.

Who belongs to the future? IGZO & AMOLED technology comparison.

Regarding the development of LCD technology in the future, the industry has already had a lot of debates, but with the acceleration of product upgrading, more and more people tend to replace LCDs with OLEDs, in order to say LCD instead of LED here. What is the TV? Because LED is not an independent TV display technology, but an LCD TV with LED backlight, the core is LCD. Due to the cutting technology of the liquid crystal panel, the small screen display device is always easier to adopt the updated display panel technology, so the overall development direction of the future liquid crystal display device can be seen from the small-sized display device. From the current market situation, Samsung's AMOLED is recognized as a next-generation display technology with excellent display performance, and the legendary IGZO display technology that the iPhone will adopt in the future is also expected. What are the differences between the two technologies? What are the advantages and disadvantages?

AMOLED technology

Let me talk about AMOLED, the full name of English AcTIveMatrix/OrganicLightEmitTIngDiode, which is a kind of OLED (OrganicLight-EmittingDisplay) technology. OLED is a phenomenon in which light is emitted by carrier injection and recombination driven by an electric field by an organic semiconductor material and a luminescent material. The OLED can emit light by using ITO transparent electrode and metal electrode as the anode and cathode of the device respectively. Under a certain voltage, electrons and holes are injected from the cathode and the anode to the electron and hole transport layer, respectively, and the electrons and holes respectively pass through the electron. And the hole transport layer migrates to the light-emitting layer and meets in the light-emitting layer to form excitons and excite the light-emitting molecules, and the latter emits visible light through radiation relaxation. AMOLED has the characteristics of faster reaction speed, higher contrast and wider viewing angle. At present, Samsung Electronics attaches great importance to this new display technology, accounting for 99% of the market share.

IGZO panel technology

The IGZO panel technology is the acronym for the four chemical elements of Indium, Gallium, Zinc, and Oxygen, which means "Indium Gallium Zinc Oxide". Channel layer material in the new generation of thin film transistor technology. Simply put, in fact, IGZO is only a channel layer material, not a new panel technology, and IPS, SVA, OLED is not a hierarchical concept, IGZO is still in the scope of TFT-LCD. The liquid crystal is capable of emitting light by plating a surface alignment agent on the glass having ITO so that the liquid crystals are aligned along a specific direction parallel to the glass surface. The principle of using an electric field to rotate the liquid crystal, adding a voltage to the two electrodes causes the direction of polarization of the liquid crystal to be parallel to the direction of the electric field. Because the refractive index of the liquid crystal changes with the direction of the liquid crystal, the result is that the polarization of the light changes after passing through the liquid crystal, and the electric switch can be used to control the light and darkness of the light, so that white light is formed when the light is transmitted. When the light is black, the characters can be displayed on the screen.

From the comparison of imaging mechanism, AMOLED and IGZO TFT-LCD panels use different light sources, OLED is self-luminous, while IGZO TFT-LCD uses backlight, the imaging mechanism of the two is completely different.

The difference in imaging mechanism results in the fact that the two panels are not the same type of products at all, but since both panels are likely to become the main technology used in most of the future products, we have to compare their strengths and weaknesses.

First of all, in terms of power consumption, based on the performance advantages of the aforementioned IGZO panel plus some actual test data, it can be seen that the power consumption of LCDs using IGZO technology has been greatly reduced, and it has been comparable to AMOLED. The second is the problem of thinner and lighter. Using IGZO materials with thin-line technology of gate-source wiring, TFT components can be made smaller, and LCDs have the opportunity to be thinner. However, it is a pity that the wide color gamut of OLEDs is not within the scope of IGZO technology.

From the manufacturing and cost of the IGZO and AMOLED panels, the world's most important display production line is still the LCD factory. IGZO is only a change in the manufacturing process, and the cost of investing in new machines is less. However, vapor deposition equipment such as AMOLED requires an additional production line. And whether the future can correspond to large glass substrates above 7th generation line is still unknown, so the overall production cost is still more advantageous than IGZO.

In addition, the TFT components and lines of the IGZO panel are shrinking. Under the same area, only one subpixel area can be loaded, and now four can be mounted, and the area of the shaded area is not increased, achieving " The same transmittance is 2 times higher and finer, which can achieve high physical resolution in a small unit area without increasing the intensity of the backlight. This is more meaningful for the upcoming 4K era, and the IGZO panel can Up to 500ppi, and AMOLED can't achieve 300ppi at this stage, so IGZO technology almost compensates for several defects of LCD compared to OLED.

It can be said that two kinds of liquid crystal panels are two different technologies, and the IGZO display technology with certain LCD accumulation in power consumption and cost is more advantageous, and in terms of color, OLED does have many advantages that TFT-LCD cannot match.
