How to represent the power supply in the circuit diagram

In the circuit diagram, the power supply is typically positioned on one side or at the top or bottom of the schematic. In a multiphase power circuit, the phases are usually arranged from top to bottom or left to right in sequence. The neutral line is generally placed below or to the left of the phase lines. There are several common ways to represent the power supply in electrical diagrams. First, a graphical symbol is used to indicate the power supply, as shown in Figure 1-40 (a). This method provides a clear and visual representation of the power source. Second, the power supply can be represented using simple lines, as illustrated in Figure 1-40 (b). This approach is often used when the exact type of power source is not critical. Third, the voltage value itself can be used to denote the power supply, as seen in Figure 1-40 (c). This helps readers quickly identify the level of voltage being supplied. Fourth, specific symbols are used to indicate the power supply. When a single line is used, the DC power is marked with a “–” symbol, while AC is represented by a “~” symbol. For multi-line representations, the positive and negative terminals of DC are labeled with “+” and “–” respectively. In three-phase AC systems, the phase sequence is indicated with the symbols “L1,” “L2,” and “L3,” and the neutral line is marked with “N,” as shown in Figure 1-40 (d). Understanding how power supplies are represented in circuit diagrams is essential for interpreting and designing electrical systems. These standardized symbols ensure clarity and consistency across different schematics. Whether it's a simple DC power source or a complex three-phase system, proper representation allows engineers and technicians to communicate effectively and avoid potential errors during installation or troubleshooting.
