Dolby AC-3, also known as Dolby Digital, is a modern digital audio format designed for home theater systems. Unlike the older Dolby Pro Logic, which was an analog system that derived four channels from two stereo channels, Dolby AC-3 uses digital technology to deliver a more immersive and accurate audio experience. The Dolby Digital AC-3 surround sound system features five full-range channels and one low-frequency effects (LFE) channel, commonly referred to as 5.1 channels. These include the front left, front right, center, and rear left and right surround channels, each capable of reproducing a full frequency range from 3 Hz to 20,000 Hz. The sixth channel, the LFE, handles bass frequencies between 3 Hz and 120 Hz, adding depth and impact to sounds like explosions or heavy impacts. This unique configuration gives the system its "0.1" designation for the subwoofer channel.

Based on psychoacoustic principles, Dolby AC-3 divides audio into small frequency bands that align with human hearing sensitivity. During encoding, it removes unnecessary information and noise while preserving essential audio details. This results in clearer, more natural sound with excellent channel separation and spatial accuracy.

The system creates a rich and immersive sound field by utilizing front left and right speakers, a center speaker, and rear or side surround speakers. It also includes a subwoofer to enhance low-frequency effects. All six channels are digitally encoded, ensuring minimal loss of detail and a high-fidelity listening experience across the entire frequency spectrum.
