One of the key advantages of the MAX5965A/MAX5965B is their support for high-power modes, capable of delivering up to 45W per port. This makes them ideal for applications requiring higher power delivery. Additionally, they introduce new Class 5 and Class 2 (Class 6) classifications for more accurate and efficient PD detection and classification. The I²C interface allows real-time current monitoring at each port, enabling precise system management and early detection of connected devices.
These devices feature an I²C compatible 3-wire serial interface that is fully software configurable and programmable. This level of flexibility enhances system design and allows for on-the-fly adjustments. The hierarchical overcurrent detection mechanism ensures that the system can monitor and manage sink current effectively, preventing potential damage from excessive loads.
The MAX5965A/MAX5965B offer four operational modes: Auto, Semi-Automatic, Manual, and Shutdown. In Auto mode, the device operates independently without software intervention. Semi-Automatic mode allows for automatic detection and classification after initialization, but requires a software command to power up the port. Manual mode provides full software control, making it perfect for diagnostics. Finally, in Shutdown mode, all operations cease, and power to the port is safely turned off.
Additional safety features include input undervoltage lockout (UVLO), input overvoltage lockout, overtemperature protection, and slew rate control during startup. The device also includes power-good signals and fault indication for improved system reliability. Programmable settings such as startup timeout, overcurrent timeout, and load disconnect detection allow for customized operation based on specific application needs.
Available in a 36-pin SSOP package, the MAX5965A/MAX5965B are suitable for use in industrial (-40°C to +85°C) and commercial (0°C to +85°C) environments. Their robust design and advanced features make them an excellent choice for modern power-over-Ethernet (PoE) systems.
