China Telecom launches TD-LTE terminal bidding to solve the 4G system dilemma

Recently, TD-LTE data terminal collection bidding was launched. According to informed sources, China Telecom's demand is more than one million, and it is clearly required that more than 300,000 units will have listing conditions in the first quarter of 2014. It is reported that this tender does not involve mobile phones.

At present, more than a dozen TD-LTE terminals customized by China Telecom for China Telecom are sent to relevant agencies of the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology for testing, including wireless network cards, MIFI, and 4G wireless gateways (CPE). Some manufacturers have obtained the radio committee model approval certificate in the shortest time, and all the network access tests can be completed in a few days, and they are officially put into the market.

China Telecom launches TD-LTE terminal bidding and urgently solves the 4G system dilemma

According to the terminal manufacturers involved in the bidding, during the Spring Festival holiday, the staff of the Teller Laboratory, a communication equipment testing agency under the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, is still working overtime and busy with various inspections.

Since the 4G license was issued by the state on December 4, 2013, China Telecom has actively promoted TD-LTE commercialization. It issued the “White Paper on China Telecom LTE Terminal Demand” to the first time, and launched the first round of TD before the Spring Festival. - LTE data terminal centralized procurement bidding, including wireless network card, Internet treasure (MIFI), wireless gateway (CPE) and other three types of products.

China Telecom's data terminal procurement bidding clearly stated that it must support the TD-LTE standard, and requires that customized 4G terminals must be available in batches in the first quarter. This shows that China Telecom is accelerating the pace of LTE network construction and terminal construction, also for 4G. The commercialization presented a clear timeline.

It is reported that China Telecom Guangzhou Research Institute has started the preliminary test of the relevant TD-LTE data terminal in the early stage. There are currently more than 20 vendors offering more than 50 products to participate in the test. Among the manufacturers are ZTE, Huawei, UT Starcom and other veteran and mainstream equipment manufacturers, as well as representatives of emerging manufacturers including Dafu, Daya and New Post.

China Telecom's defense strategy

Careful users can find that the tender has two important information points: one is to support TD-LTE, and the other is that the bidding terminal does not involve mobile phones.

The most "tangled" issue of 4G licenses is China Telecom. Since the CDMA EV-DO 3G system adopted does not support a smooth transition to FDD and TDD, China Telecom must establish a new network if it chooses to build a network. This is why China Mobile (Weibo) said that it does not want TDD to be operated by an operator and that it is "clearing the darkness" of China Telecom.

China Unicom (microblogging) can use the existing 3G upgrade to reach 21M to achieve 4G effect. When the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology issued the FDD license, China Unicom only needs to upgrade on the basis of the original WCDMA base station, which can be in a faster time. Building a 4G network.

In the face of China Mobile's aggressive 4G smashing and China Unicom's 3G, the problem of 4G lag development will inevitably affect China Telecom's original mobile business growth in the 3G era. Therefore, since there is a TD-LTE license on hand, it must be used first, and under the condition that the current 4G network coverage is not mature enough, the data terminal is more easily recognized by the user than the mobile phone.

Although in theory, China Telecom's 4G mobile phone users can carry out mobile communications on a global scale, but because there is no unified international communication standard, China Telecom's several standards are incompatible with each other, causing inconvenience to mobile phone users.

In the future, China Telecom needs mobile phone manufacturers to produce multi-mode mobile phones that are suitable for CDMA, TDD and FDD. This requires a certain amount of time from the perspective of R&D and production. Therefore, there is no mobile phone for this bidding.

Although China Telecom has obvious disadvantages in terms of system and 4G, it can use its TD-LTE license to develop its defense strategy first.

It is understood that China Telecom has launched 4G network equipment bidding in response to challenges and competition, including FDD LTE and TD-LTE base stations, plans to invest tens of billions, and the pilot has changed from the original 4 provinces to 31 province. Among them, TD-LTE accounts for 30%, and TD-LTE scale network test is carried out in 42 cities across the country.

However, for China Telecom, converged networking is the best choice. After all, TD-LTE is the dominant system of China Mobile. China Telecom's existing TD-LTE-centric networking mode does not have a competitive advantage for the market. Obviously, the success or failure is more due to the release time of the FDD LTE license.
