The home appliance industry will usher in more favorable growth points in 2018 and worth looking forward to
In the tenth year of the global economic crisis, 2018 marked a turning point as the economy began to recover. This recovery brought new opportunities for the home appliance industry, which was expected to experience significant growth and innovation. During an internal meeting held by the China Household Electrical Appliances Association—the Fourth Session of the Sixth Council and the Sixth Standing Council—Jiang Feng, the association’s chairman, highlighted these positive developments. She pointed out that consumer demand was evolving, shifting from simply seeking "more" to pursuing "better." As a result, the industry was moving toward higher quality and more advanced products.
According to data from Yikang, a leading market research firm, several appliances such as dishwashers, smart toilet seats, robotic vacuum cleaners, and wall-boring machines were gaining popularity rapidly. In 2017 alone, dishwasher sales in China surged by 130%, while smart toilet seat sales grew by 50%. Even traditional appliances like air conditioners, refrigerators, range hoods, stoves, and water heaters saw double-digit growth, with many brands reporting increases between 15% and 30%. These figures reflected a strong and dynamic market.
Hisense also experienced impressive growth. Their home air conditioners and commercial air conditioners achieved 42% and 37% growth respectively in 2017. Dr. Wang Zhigang, a representative from Hisense Air Conditioner, noted that not only were sales up, but profits were also stronger, thanks to the industry's ongoing transformation. He believed that although the urban air conditioning market was nearing saturation, there were still vast opportunities in third- and fourth-tier cities, as well as international markets like Brazil and India. Additionally, Hisense had a strong technological edge in products such as laser TVs, 360° climate control air conditioners, and heat pump dryers, all of which were seen as key growth areas for 2018.
Bosi Appliances’ president, Gelk, shared similar optimism. In 2017, Bosi’s sales in China grew by over 20%, driven largely by the rising demand for dishwashers, dryers, and ovens. The company also announced that its newly built dishwasher factory in China had started production ahead of the Spring Festival. At the upcoming AWE China Home Appliances and Consumer Electronics Expo on March 8, visitors would get their first look at this new facility. Gelk expressed full confidence in the Chinese market for 2018.
Fang Tai, another major player, reported even more impressive results. With a 33% sales increase in 2017, the company became the first domestic kitchen appliance brand to reach a sales target of 10 billion yuan. Vice President Zhu Yongding emphasized that Fang Tai’s goal for the next decade is to create high-end, culturally inspired kitchen appliances that reflect Chinese craftsmanship and tradition.
The positive trends in the home appliance industry also benefited upstream suppliers. Haili President Li Haibin revealed that in 2017, the company’s air-conditioning inverter compressors grew by 58%, commercial compressors by 87%, and non-air-conditioning compressors by around 30%. He noted that the industry was gradually transforming from being large to being strong.
With so much momentum, it seemed likely that 2018 would bring even greater benefits to the Chinese home appliance sector. Whether it could surpass the 30% growth seen by major brands in 2017 remained to be seen, but the signs were promising.
