ON Semiconductor Introduces Highly Integrated Capacitance-to-Digital Converters to Provide Gesture Sensing and Touch for Automotive and Industrial Systems

8-channel devices with sensitivity up to 150 mm to support gesture recognition

ON Semiconductor has introduced a new touch/proximity sensing solution that combines industry-leading performance, price/performance and convenience into a single chip. The LC717A30UJ high dynamic range capacitance-to-digital converter uses mutual capacitance to detect capacitance variations down to the femto farad stage (fF). Eliminating parasitic capacitance increases the sensitivity of the detector, while its built-in noise suppression mechanism suppresses the effects of electromagnetic interference (EMI).

Eight capacitive sensing input channels optimize the LC717A30UJ for systems that require a range of switches. The device includes an integrated multiplexer for input channel selection, an analog-to-digital converter, a two-stage amplifier that determines capacitance variation and analog output amplitude, a system clock, a power-on reset circuit, and all required control logic To create a holistic approach. The I2C and SPI interfaces can be selected based on system application requirements.

Because the device's sensitivity range is 150 millimeters (mm), which exceeds the range of any competing devices on the market, its higher sensitivity supports gesture motion and provides traditional touch functions, thereby increasing user control options to solve a wide range of applications. . In addition, it still works when there is an air gap between the sensor/PCB and the shield, so engineers don't need to include light guides in the assembly and reduce overall complexity. The device also integrates an auto-calibration function that optimizes and self-calibrates the total capacitance based on electrode, line capacitance, and ambient environment, greatly accelerating system development cycles and enhancing field robustness.

The LC717A30UJ provides fast response with a response time measurement of 16 milliseconds (ms) for eight sensing channels and an operating supply voltage of 2.6 volts (V) to 5.5 V with a low power standby mode of 1 microamp (μA). High integration means minimizing the need for external components, further reducing bills of materials. To meet automotive application requirements such as vehicle entry systems and dashboard control, the device is AEC-Q100 compliant. It has high integration and wide dynamic range, and can be widely used in various touch or gesture human-machine interfaces of industrial and consumer end products, such as induction cookers, refrigerators, home entertainment systems, building automation equipment, industrial equipment and lighting control.

Ikuya Kawasaki, general manager of ON Semiconductor's Smart Power Solutions business unit, said: "It is well known that touch technology has been widely used in consumer electronics over the past decade, and the opportunities for applications in various non-consumer applications are increasing. Having the key attributes required to address these needs, providing a robust, simple deployment solution that successfully combines low cost and superior performance."
Packaging and pricing
The LC717A30UJ is available in a SSOP-30 package and is priced at $1.05 per unit in 10,000-piece quantities. ON Semiconductor offers the LC717A30UJGEVK Capacitive Touch Sensor Operation Evaluation Board to evaluate a variety of different switching modes.
