NXP introduces dimmable LED controller to improve 12V MR16 lamp

On June 9, NXP Semiconductors NV (NASDAQ: NXPI) released the SSL3401, a dimmable single-stage controller IC for improved MR16 LEDs using 12V AC mains light. Mass production is expected to begin in July 2013.

The SSL3401 is compatible with a wide range of dimmers and transformers - for the most common combination of over 80% - in a compact form factor for most common MR16 GU5.3 and AR111 housings and sockets. The SSL3401 supports ambient temperatures up to 105oC and provides temperature drop protection.

Based on NXP's GreenChipTM technology, the SSL3401 generates stable, accurate currents and has a dimming capability of less than 5% of the light output in the most common practical operations. Although the maximum lamp power is dependent on the thermal performance of the lamp, the typical 7W MR16 LED lamp using the SSL3401 can still achieve less than 15% total harmonic distortion (THD), power factor above 0.9, efficiency up to 78%, and less than ±10%. LED ripple current.

Ryan Zahn, General Manager of NXP's Semiconductor Lighting Solutions product line, said: "The SSL3401 is designed specifically for dimmable MR16 LEDs with a compact single-stage controller IC and has been extensively tested to make it compatible with a wide range of dimmers. And transformers. By helping to improve lamp manufacturers to reduce costs, we hope to simplify the transition from halogen to LED in a wider range, especially when the 12V MR16 lamp becomes a popular choice for commercial and residential lighting."
