Ma Yun’s “Robot Gas Station” is coming.

Alibaba has announced plans to develop two phases of its smart gas station initiative, aiming to significantly expand the scale and efficiency of fueling services. The first version of the "Unmanned Gas Station" was launched in October this year, built upon the transformation of traditional gas stations. However, the more advanced 2.0 version is expected to be completed in 2018. This next phase will introduce fully automated features such as license plate recognition, automatic identification of vehicle owners, oil type detection, and seamless payment processing without human intervention. The concept of intelligence here means that robots will replace manual labor, with intelligent machines taking over the role of traditional gas station attendants. A smart gas station can complete the entire refueling process using infrared cameras and robotic arms. Customers simply drive in, park, and leave—without ever needing to get out of their car. There’s no waiting in line, no need to open the fuel cap manually, and everything flows smoothly from entry to departure. **Operation Process of the "Unmanned Gas Station"** First, when a vehicle arrives at the gas station, an infrared camera scans the license plate and matches it with the owner's identity, vehicle model, and Taobao account information. Next, after entering the station, the vehicle parks itself at the designated refueling spot. The system then automatically performs all necessary steps: opening the fuel cap, selecting the appropriate gasoline, refueling, closing the cap, and securing it—all without the driver needing to step out. Finally, once the vehicle leaves, the payment is automatically processed through the customer’s Taobao account. The entire experience—from entering to leaving—is handled seamlessly through data transmission and smart sensing technologies. Compared to traditional refueling, smart gas stations represent a major shift in convenience and automation. However, this innovation also brings challenges. Like how unmanned supermarkets have reduced the need for cashiers, smart gas stations may lead to job losses for many workers. It raises important questions about what happens to these employees and how society will adapt. Additionally, there are significant technical challenges involved. Since vehicles and fuel involve inherent risks, any mistake during the refueling process could have serious consequences. Therefore, while these stations offer greater convenience, they must also take on important social responsibilities to ensure safety and reliability.
