The "PiezoHapt Actuator" developed by TDK Corporation is a groundbreaking tactile feedback device designed to deliver realistic vibration sensations. It was launched in March, offering samples for early evaluation. This actuator is based on a single-crystal structure, combining a laminated piezoelectric element with a vibrating plate. It operates at low voltages and supports multiple vibration modes, making it ideal for a wide range of applications. Unlike traditional eccentric rotating motors or linear actuators, the PiezoHapt Actuator is among the thinnest in the world, with a thickness of approximately 0.35mm. Its design allows for fast transient response—rising in about 0.004 seconds—which enables immediate and precise haptic feedback. This makes it more energy-efficient than conventional actuators, as it can operate under short-term power supply and consume less energy overall. The laminated piezoelectric structure of the actuator generates greater displacement compared to single-plate components of similar thickness. This means that even at low voltages (24V or less), it can effectively transmit vibrations through the skin, eliminating the need for high-voltage environments typically required by other piezoelectric haptic technologies. Moreover, the PiezoHapt Actuator offers flexible control over vibration amplitude and frequency via pulse modulation. This allows for detailed and varied vibration patterns, which is especially beneficial in applications requiring nuanced tactile responses, such as virtual reality (VR) interfaces, mobile devices, and wearable technology. This new actuator follows the release of TDK’s PowerHap™ piezo actuators in November 2016, expanding the company’s capabilities in haptic feedback solutions.
