BYD's President Wang Chuanfu picks up outside Nei Nei: BYD's internal adjustment of external seekers

A week before BYD announced its 2017 performance, Wang Chuanfu, the chairman of BYD, visited Baoding in Hebei and met with Wei Jianjun, the chairman of Great Wall Motors. Although both companies remained silent on the details of their meeting, it sparked speculation about potential collaboration in the new energy vehicle sector. At that time, BYD was carrying a significant number of negative average fuel consumption points—around 243,500—while holding one of the largest new energy point balances in the country, close to 300,000. This made the visit all the more intriguing. BYD's 2017 financial report revealed a total revenue of approximately 102.6 billion yuan, with a net profit of around 4.066 billion yuan. Despite being the global leader in new energy car sales for three consecutive years, with over 110,000 units sold annually, the company’s profitability had declined from the previous year, raising questions about its long-term sustainability. Since 2014, when China began heavily supporting new energy vehicles, BYD leveraged its technological edge in this field to grow rapidly. From 2014 to 2016, its net profit surged from 433 million to 5.052 billion yuan, reflecting a compound annual growth rate of 243%. However, by 2016, the benefits of vertical integration were starting to wane, and Wang Chuanfu recognized the need for change as government subsidies dwindled and new competitors entered the market. In response, BYD initiated a series of reforms, including splitting internal divisions, introducing external suppliers, and opening up platforms for global developers. These moves marked a departure from its traditional vertically integrated model. Wang Chuanfu emphasized that 2018 would be a pivotal year for BYD, with a renewed focus on new energy vehicles and cloud solutions. While maintaining its competitive edge in the new energy sector, the company also aimed to regain lost ground in the traditional automotive market. Despite these efforts, BYD faced challenges, especially as the subsidy landscape shifted. The 2017 financial report showed that government subsidies accounted for 23.58% of its operating profit, highlighting the industry's reliance on policy support. Analysts noted that while BYD ranked second in market value among auto companies, its net profit placed it seventh, underscoring the pressure to improve efficiency and diversify its revenue streams. Looking ahead, BYD aimed to expand into new markets and product lines. In early 2018, the company launched several new models equipped with advanced battery technology, aiming to qualify for higher subsidies. Additionally, BYD planned to spin off its power battery business, which could eventually go public. The company also sought to open up its platform to external developers, encouraging innovation in automotive software and digital control systems. This move was seen as a strategic effort to counter emerging competitors like NIO and XPeng. Beyond the automotive sector, BYD was expanding into rail transit and cloud services, aiming to build a diversified portfolio. With the "Thirteenth Five-Year Plan" expected to boost urban rail development, BYD positioned itself to capitalize on this trend. As BYD continued to evolve, Wang Chuanfu remained focused on transformation, recognizing that adaptability was key to long-term success. Whether through technological innovation, strategic partnerships, or new market opportunities, the company aimed to maintain its leadership in the ever-changing automotive landscape.
