One of the key points Scott emphasized was the common mistake in using Industrial Ethernet for control tasks — choosing the wrong switch. He stressed that hubs should never be used in such environments, as they can lead to network instability and performance issues.
Among the 10 essential guidelines he shared, several stood out:
- **Understand your system's requirements** thoroughly. This includes factors like the working environment, I/O control, integration with IT systems, scalability, security, data traffic volume, transmission speed, distance, and the type of transmission media (e.g., copper, fiber).
- **Know your system's environment**. Determine whether the control network is integrated with the company’s IT network or kept separate. If it’s integrated, there are numerous considerations to address, especially regarding security, network traffic, and IP addressing.
- **Ensure IT staff are fully aware of field-level needs**. It's crucial that IT personnel understand who will manage the network, whether a unified IP address scheme is in place, and what responsibilities each party has. Also, IT teams must recognize that I/O data streams are typically multicast.
- **Implement proper network segmentation**. This helps simplify network management and improves security across the entire infrastructure.
- **Avoid using hubs**. They are outdated and not suitable for modern industrial Ethernet setups.
- **Choose the right switch**. Whether managed or unmanaged, the choice depends on specific needs. Managed switches offer features like port mirroring, IGMP snooping, and diagnostics, which are essential for advanced network control.
- **Select the appropriate physical media**. Copper, twisted pair, or fiber — each has its own advantages and limitations, and the choice should align with the application's requirements.
