GaN LED market share will increase to 49% in 2016

According to a research institute, the share of lighting in the GaN LED market is expected to rise from 21% in 2011 to 49% in 2016; lighting LED revenue is expected to grow by more than 300%.

In 2011, GaN LED package revenue decreased by 6% compared with last year, mainly due to the fact that the supply-side growth rate was almost three times that of the demand side from 2010 to 2011, resulting in huge price pressure and lower capacity utilization levels of LED factories.

Due to lower-than-expected panel shipments and LED penetration, the average price of LEDs for backlights fell 34%, and backlight revenue fell 13% to $4.8 billion. LED revenue for television fell 5% to $1.9 billion in 2011, with a penetration rate of 39% lower than the original forecast of 43%.

The agency expects that the GaN LED market will gradually pick up between 2012 and 2015, and due to the accelerated development of the lighting market, there will be double-digit growth in 2013 and 2014. It is expected that the revenue of LEDs in lighting applications will exceed that of backlight applications in 2012, one year earlier than originally expected. The main reason is the increased demand for LED lighting, and the decline in LED TV penetration, and in order to open up the market in developing countries, TV manufacturers have introduced low-cost direct-lit LED backlight products.

PWM controllers are the most common controller on the market today. These charge the battery by rapidly switching the full charging current on and off when the battery reaches a fully charged state. The length of the charging current pulse gradually decreases as battery voltage rises, reducing the average current into the battery.
