Dyson will select a site in Singapore to manufacture electric cars

Since the global consumer electronics giant Apple has joined the automotive business, Dyson will also build a car!

As a world-renowned home appliance design and manufacturing company, after its newly released curling wand became popular, the CEO of Dyson announced that it will select a site in Singapore to manufacture electric cars!

Dyson chooses to build a car in Singapore

Dyson, who has been rumored to choose a location for building a car in the UK or China, has recently been rumored to choose a location for the car finally settled!

Recently, Dyson CEO Jim Rowan announced that Dyson will choose Singapore instead of the UK or China to produce its first batch of electric vehicles, and hopes to clarify its business. Rowan wrote in an email to employees that Dyson’s existing business development and team in Singapore, coupled with Singapore’s important advanced production technology, made the country a leader in the candidate countries. Prior to this, Dyson had selected a site for a British factory in the shortlist, but in order to be closer to the existing production center and potential customers, he chose Singapore!

Rowan said that the Singapore team's superb technical expertise and professionalism offset its high cost base. Dyson is unwilling to confirm the scale of its investment in a new plant in Singapore, which is the fourth place Dyson has developed in Singapore. Construction of the new plant will start at the end of this year, complete by 2020, and start production in 2021.

At present, Dyson is planning to use its existing knowledge in batteries and electric motors to enter the automotive industry through a series of electric vehicles, giving it an advantage over established manufacturers. Dyson plans to invest 2 billion pounds in its electric vehicle project, of which 1 billion pounds will be used for battery technology, and another 1 billion pounds will be used for vehicle development and production. Robertson, a non-executive director of Dyson, also said that Dyson will have more than one car factory, and the company plans to produce several models.

According to information previously disclosed by foreign media, Dyson's plan includes three models, of which the production scale of the first model reached thousands of vehicles, in order to establish demand for this model.

How will the innovative concept be reflected on the car body?

People familiar with the relevant plan said that subsequent vehicle production will reach tens of thousands. What kind of battery will Dyson use to power the vehicle? The company initially planned to use internally developed technology and said all options are under consideration, including purchasing batteries from external suppliers.

However, foreign media have long revealed the relevant information of the model. Dyson has excavated a team of more than 400 automotive engineers from BMW, Tesla, Aston Martin, etc. The new car may adopt a five-door design, with body dimensions of 4.1 meters, 1.75 meters, and 1.5 meters, respectively. Like all Dyson products, the overall design of the new car body follows the concept of "form serves function". For example, the front and rear windshields will be equipped with Dyson Airblade windshield cleaning systems. In terms of power, two high-power motors independently developed by Dyson are responsible for driving the front wheels, and another two low-power motors drive the rear wheels, which can realize a timely four-wheel drive form.

In addition, Dyson will develop a detachable box-type solid-state battery pack that will be installed in the engine compartment of a traditional fuel vehicle. It is reported that the solid-state battery pack developed by the battery company SakTI3 invested by Dyson is lighter and more energy-efficient than lithium-ion batteries, further reducing the weight of the battery pack and the requirements for the control system. The battery pack will provide two capacities to suit short-distance and long-distance users, and the price will be relatively low. From the current information level, Dyson's battery supply and supply chain are not a problem.

Already planning new energy layout

In fact, Dyson has been planning for a long time in the field of new energy vehicles.

According to Dyson’s founder James Dyson confessed to the mass media earlier, his original intention to devote himself to the car manufacturing business was originally due to Dyson’s report comparing laboratory white mice with diesel exhaustion. Motivated the company to develop a special car exhaust filter in 1990. But this kind of filter has not been put into production, because car companies believe that this kind of filter still has a big problem in processing the waste residue in the exhaust gas, and it has not achieved the purpose of solving the energy problem.

Secondly, Dyson was dissatisfied with the government's subsidies and funding for designated clean diesel internal combustion engine manufacturers. In addition to the diesel gate scandal of Volkswagen a few years ago, and the insistence of car companies on their own positions, Dyson decided to develop its own battery technology. Dyson believes that nowadays is a good time to gather research on the three aspects of batteries, digital motors, and liquid kinetic energy, aiming to solve energy problems, rather than simply dealing with exhaust pipe emissions. At this point, Dyson has started his own car building.

In order to develop electric vehicles, Dyson spent US$900 million to acquire battery design company SakTI3 as early as 2015. This is a start-up company located in Michigan, which mainly designs all-solid-state batteries. Secondly, Dyson also started to build a global supply chain control center in July 2017. In order to cooperate with the control, Dyson will also deploy Elementum's supply chain management system, and has already received special funding from the British government for battery development.

Edit comment:

With the rapid development of the new energy automobile industry, more and more companies have invested in the car-making movement. Cross-border car-building is no longer a novelty! However, opportunities are always left to those who are prepared. Dyson, which has already planned its layout in the field of electric vehicles, and Dyson, the king of British design, can make a big difference in new energy vehicles? It is worth looking forward to!
