Dubai will become the first city in the world to provide residents with blockchain payment solutions

EmCredit, the UAE's first official credit bureau under the Ministry of Economic Development of Dubai, is promoting its official blockchain state digital currency emCash, and promoting PoS devices in government stores in Dubai to achieve wider adoption.

According to a report from Trade Arabia on Monday, blockchain payment provider Pundi X will also provide assistance and deploy PoS devices in retail stores to facilitate Dubai citizens and residents to purchase payment products.

A spokesperson for the state-owned company emCredit said: “Becoming the first city in the world to provide residents with blockchain-based payment solutions is an exciting time for Dubai. The deployment of cutting-edge technologies such as blockchain is an exciting time for Dubai. An important priority and bring benefits to Dubai’s citizens, customers and businesses in the form of convenience and safety."

Blocknet reported in October 2017 that emCash is Dubai’s first blockchain-based digital currency, linked to the UAE’s legal currency, the dirham.

UAE residents can use digital currency through the smartphone app "emPay". The digital currency-enabled blockchain is compatible with shared ledgers and can record transactions instantly. At the same time, "the control of payment is not limited to any member of the emPay ecosystem" , EmCredit executive officer Muna Al Qassab explained at the time.

The entire ecosystem consisting of digital currency, smartphone applications and PoS terminals will be developed and tested before obtaining government regulatory approvals this fiscal year.

The "Smart Dubai Office" is a government plan led by the Crown Prince of Dubai. It currently cooperates with financial institutions and other municipal departments in the UAE's largest and most populous city, and has approved 38 government entities in the city to operate blockchain payment platforms.
